AI-Native Systems Engineer (Launch & Quality)

About the Opportunity at HQ Simple:
HQ Simple is building Engage, a platform for managing the contingent workforce end-to-end: PEO solution, W-2 Employer of Record, 1099 Compliance, and global talent in one system. We are beyond MVP and entering the critical phase of hardening the product, reducing risk, and preparing for launch.
This is not a traditional engineering role focused on shipping features all day. We are hiring an AI-native systems operator who can take a product from “it works” to “it’s ready” by driving quality, reliability, security posture, and operational discipline across the platform.
You will use tools like Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Copilot to accelerate implementation. Your value is judgment: defining what needs to be built or fixed, setting acceptance criteria, and verifying it works correctly in production-like conditions.
As an internal employee at HQ Simple, you will have the opportunity to work remotely and enjoy benefits such as a four-day work week, strong medical / dental / vision coverage, unlimited PTO designed to be used, and the flexibility to partner with a distributed team across the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK.
Help lead the final stage of bringing Engage to market and play a critical role in making the system launchable, stable, and ready for customer use.
Responsibilities & Expectations:
- Own launch readiness through security checks, edge-case testing, release checklists, and pre-launch validation
- Create and maintain test plans, manual and automated regression coverage, and QA workflows that reduce bug escapes
- Identify bottlenecks across frontend, API, and database layers, tune hotspots, and validate system performance under load
- Manage and validate Supabase schema changes, ensure API integrations are stable, and keep Vercel deployments clean and repeatable
- Collect feedback, identify friction, simplify flows, and prevent unnecessary complexity from reaching production
- Build runbooks, incident patterns, release processes, and operational documentation so a small team can run with discipline and speed
Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:
- Systems thinker who understands how UI, API, database, and integrations connect and where failures tend to hide
- AI-native operator who uses AI daily for architecture, refactors, testing, and debugging, while validating outputs rigorously
- Process-driven and able to turn ambiguity into checklists, workflows, and repeatable systems
- Technically capable of reading and modifying code, shipping PRs with AI assistance, debugging production issues, and reasoning about Postgres and data models
- Strong judgment in defining readiness, acceptance criteria, and risk thresholds before release
- Low ego, high output mindset focused on shipping the right thing and preventing customer pain
Minimum Requirements:
- 2+ years of experience in software engineering, systems engineering, QA engineering, or a similar role
- Demonstrated ability to harden, stabilize, and verify production systems
- Experience working across frontend, API, and database layers
- Ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
- Strong problem-solving skills and clear written communication for documentation and process creation
- Comfort working in AI-assisted development workflows and validating implementation quality
Nice to Have:
- Experience with Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Supabase, PostgreSQL, and Vercel
- Background in QA automation, test frameworks, or reliability engineering
- Experience working at a fast-moving startup or pre-launch product environment
- Comfort working remotely with a distributed team across multiple geographies
Join HQ Simple and help bring Engage to launch with the quality, stability, and operational discipline required to support modern contingent workforce management.
