Mexico Digital Nomad Visa
Mexico doesn't have a dedicated digital nomad visa, but the Temporary Resident Visa (renewable up to 4 years) is the standard route for remote workers and earns a path to permanent residency.
Best for
- U.S.-time-zone workers
- Spanish learners and Latin-America-bound expats
- Workers wanting a low-friction North-American option
Eligibility
- Monthly income of about $4,300 demonstrated over the prior 6 months, or savings/investments of about $74,000 (varies ±5-10% by consulate)
- Valid passport
- Application at a Mexican consulate outside Mexico (cannot convert from a tourist visa in-country)
- Clean criminal record
Application steps
- Apply at a Mexican consulate in your home country
- Provide income or savings evidence over 6–12 months
- Receive an entry visa, then enter Mexico within 180 days
- Convert to a Temporary Resident card with INM in Mexico within 30 days
Tax considerations
Cross 183 days plus a Mexican center of vital interests and you become Mexican tax resident on worldwide income. Below the threshold, only Mexican-sourced income is taxable. U.S. citizens continue worldwide filing.
This is general information and not tax advice. Confirm with a tax advisor licensed in your home country and Mexico before triggering residency.
Need EOR in Mexico?
Since Mexico's 2021 outsourcing reform, EOR is only legal through a STPS-registered REPSE provider for non-core specialised services. Using an unregistered intermediary exposes the client to joint liability for IMSS, INFONAVIT, and the 10% PTU profit-share. The DNV is fine for true freelancers; for a dedicated worker, route through a REPSE-compliant partner.
HQ Simple services Mexico EOR through our vetted partner network. Direct EOR sits with the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia.
Talk to us about EOR in MexicoA 20-minute call usually settles it: EOR if the worker is a local resident, DNV if they keep their home employer. We'll tell you which is cleaner.
