Iceland Digital Nomad Visa
Iceland's remote-work visa is a 6-month visit, not a residency permit. The income threshold is among the highest globally, but the trade-off is an extraordinary place to work for half a year.
Best for
- High-income remote workers wanting a short Nordic base
- Travellers combining work with extensive Iceland exploration
- Anyone testing Icelandic life before a longer commitment
Eligibility
- Non-EEA/EFTA citizenship
- Monthly income of ISK 1,000,000 (~$7,200), plus ISK 1,300,000 (~$9,400) if accompanied by family
- Health insurance valid in Iceland
- Remote employment or own-business income from outside Iceland
Application steps
- Apply via Iceland's Directorate of Immigration (UTL)
- Pay the ISK 12,200 application fee
- Submit income, insurance, and remote-work proof
- Receive decision in roughly 4 weeks
Tax considerations
The 6-month limit keeps most holders below the residency threshold, so income usually stays taxed in your home country.
This is general information and not tax advice. Confirm with a tax advisor licensed in your home country and Iceland before triggering residency.
Need EOR in Iceland?
Iceland's headline 6.35% employer social charge is misleadingly low. Pension auto-adds 11.5%, near-universal union membership pulls in collective-agreement minimums on pay, leave, and sick days, and the default notice is three months on both sides. EOR is worth it once the role lasts more than a few months or sits inside any covered trade.
HQ Simple services Iceland EOR through our vetted partner network. Direct EOR sits with the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia.
