Application steps

  1. Apply at the Portuguese consulate in your country of residence with income, accommodation, and insurance proof
  2. Receive a 4-month entry visa, then enter Portugal
  3. Schedule a residence permit appointment with AIMA (formerly SEF)
  4. Receive a 2-year residence permit, renewable for 3 more

Tax considerations

After 183 days of residency you become Portuguese tax resident. The Non-Habitual Resident regime that previously offered a flat rate has been wound down; consult a Portuguese tax advisor before triggering residency. U.S. citizens still file worldwide income with the IRS.
