Norway (mainland) Digital Nomad Visa
Norway has no formal digital nomad visa for mainland residency. The closest route is the Self-Employed Person permit through UDI, intended for freelancers with a Norwegian-client base. It's stricter than most DNVs but earns full mainland Norwegian residency.
Best for
- Established freelancers with at least one Norwegian client
- Founders with a registered Norwegian business plan
- Workers willing to navigate UDI's documentation requirements
Eligibility
- Self-employed status with a stable client base
- At least one Norwegian client or contract
- Demonstrated annual business income meeting subsistence requirements
- Documented business plan and qualifications relevant to the work
- Health insurance and proof of accommodation
Application steps
- Apply via UDI with contract, business plan, qualification, and income proof
- Pay the application fee (currently around NOK 6,300)
- Wait for a decision (processing time varies, often several months)
- Register with the local police within 7 days of arrival
Tax considerations
Mainland residency triggers Norwegian tax on worldwide income. Treaty relief is available for most home countries, but Norway is a high-tax jurisdiction; structure carefully.
This is general information and not tax advice. Confirm with a tax advisor licensed in your home country and Norway (mainland) before triggering residency.
Need EOR in Norway (mainland)?
Choose EOR when the worker needs full Norwegian employee status, including sick pay from day one, AFP pension, holiday pay (feriepenger) at 10.2 to 12%, and protection under the Working Environment Act. The DNV's self-employed route skips employer national insurance (14.1%) but also skips those protections, which collective-bargaining-heavy sectors increasingly demand.
HQ Simple services Norway (mainland) EOR through our vetted partner network. Direct EOR sits with the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia.
Talk to us about EOR in Norway (mainland)A 20-minute call usually settles it: EOR if the worker is a local resident, DNV if they keep their home employer. We'll tell you which is cleaner.
